Stromness Nursery were nominated as a finalist in the Global Intergenerational Awards and were Highly Commended. Mrs Rendall and Miss Harvey were away to attend workshops and the Scottish Excellence Awards in Glasgow. What an amazing achievement for the nursery and Orkney as a whole. This is due to our work with Hamnavoe House. The nursery visits one afternoon a week where sessions are planned and delivered by Mrs Rendall. Children attend in groups for a block of sessions and the activities are linked to the national curriculum (CfE) and to the children and residents’ interests.
Mrs Rendall and Miss Harvey were instrumental in the nomination and had to complete a very comprehensive application form on the work we do in partnership with Hamnavoe House
There were only two Scottish finalists and although we did not win the award, we were Highly Commended for our “Peedie Projects” within the Diversity and Inclusion category.
One of the judges spoke with the ladies and said “she sat on our project for days and days and had an extremely hard time coming to a verdict”. She went on to say she how much she values our project and would love to come and visit us and come along to a session.

School & nursery inspection
We are pleased that our recent HMIE Inspection Reports have now been published today on their website. You will see separate reports – one for the nursery and one for the school.
It is great to see the fantastic work in the nursery and that the inspection team saw the many improvements that school has made over the past couple of years. We hope you enjoy reading them.

The first set of street design improvements have been installed along Ferry Road in Stromness, as part of the ‘A Safer Route to School’ project.
Local community organisations and Stromness Primary School’s Pupil Council visited the new infrastructure on Tuesday at a celebration event.
The event recognised attendees’ valuable contributions to the project so far, which has been led by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust in partnership with Orkney Islands Council.

‘A Safer Route to School’ seeks to create a more accessible and welcoming Ferry Road where everyone can make safe, enjoyable local journeys on foot or on wheels.
The project has been championed by the Pupil Council and local organisations (including the Parent Council), who have all played a central role in shaping new concept designs for a waterfront that reflects the unique character and identity of Stromness.
